How Much Matcha Per Day Is Right for You?
For most healthy adults, one to two servings of matcha per day is a sensible rhythm.
That usually means around 1 to 2 grams per serving, or approximately 2 to 4 grams across the day.
But there is no reason to turn that number into another wellness target. The right amount depends on your caffeine sensitivity, sleep, what else you drink and how matcha makes you feel.
Start with one. Then pay attention.
How much matcha should you start with?
If you are new to matcha, begin with 1 to 2 grams once a day.
Prepare it with water, enjoy it as a latte or make it part of a quiet morning ritual.
Give yourself several days to notice how you respond before adding another serving.
If you feel focused, comfortable and sleep normally, a second matcha earlier in the day may work well for you.
If you feel restless, experience stomach discomfort or notice your sleep changing, reduce the serving or drink it earlier.
More is not automatically better.
How much caffeine is in matcha?
Caffeine varies depending on the matcha and serving size, but 2 grams of matcha commonly provides around 40 to 70 mg of caffeine.
For comparison, the FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine per day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most healthy adults. That is a general guideline, not a number you need to reach.
Matcha also naturally contains L-theanine, an amino acid studied alongside caffeine for its effects on attention and alertness.
This combination is part of what makes matcha different, but L-theanine does not remove the effects of caffeine.
Your afternoon matcha still counts.
Think about your total caffeine, not just matcha
Two matchas may work perfectly if they replace your morning and afternoon coffees.
Two matchas on top of coffee, pre-workout and an energy drink are a very different story.
Consider everything you consume during the day that contains caffeine.
Sleep is particularly useful feedback. If your afternoon matcha makes it harder to fall asleep, move it earlier or skip the second serving.
Protecting tomorrow's energy is more valuable than forcing another boost today.
A simple daily matcha rhythm
For many people, the easiest routine looks something like this:
Morning: 1.5 to 2 grams of matcha
Optional early afternoon: 1 to 1.5 grams
You do not need to follow this exactly.
Some days one bowl will be enough. Other days you may enjoy a second.
At MTL, we prefer ritual over optimization. The purpose is not to calculate the maximum matcha your body can tolerate. It is to find an amount that supports your day without asking something back from your sleep or wellbeing.
If you are still discovering matcha, starting with a small quantity also makes sense. Our 10g Discovery Matcha was created so you can experience the ritual several times before deciding whether it belongs in your everyday routine.

When should you be more careful with matcha?
Caffeine affects everyone differently.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, particularly sensitive to caffeine, have a medical condition affected by caffeine, take medications that may interact with it, or have been advised to limit caffeine, speak with your healthcare professional about an appropriate amount.
Matcha can also feel uncomfortable on an empty stomach for some people. If that happens, try having it with or after food.
Find your amount, then stop thinking about it
A daily ritual should make life simpler, not give you another metric to manage.
Start with 1 to 2 grams.
Notice your energy. Notice your sleep. Adjust when necessary.
Then let the ritual become a ritual.
The right amount of matcha is not the maximum you can drink. It is the amount that leaves you feeling clear, present and ready for what comes next.
